Landscaping Features Add Appeal

By John G Stone

Landscaping is considered by most people to be a combination of engineering science (insofar as it is a construction project with concrete goals) and artistic flair (insofar as the goal of landscaping is usually to beautiful the grounds of a building). This combination can be an uneasy one, as a rampant artistic vision can call for impossible (or at least very expensive) construction projects. Nevertheless, a balance must be struck in order to achieve the desired effect in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Judging the success of a landscaping effort is often deceptively easy, because landscaping is normally confined to the realm of the visible. What you see is what you have, for the most part. There may be safety features "hiding in plain sight" insofar as they may not be readily apparent, but barring any hidden pitfalls, most people will judge the book by its cover when it comes to a building's grounds.

Unless you are building from the ground up, however, you need not raze everything and start anew. You can pick and choose which areas are in greatest need of improvement and start there. Sometimes a bit of tweaking is all that was missing from a building's environs. Perhaps some of the plants or trees can be changed or rearranged to either provide more shade or privacy, or simply more beauty.

Such features can be nakedly functional as well as aesthetically useful, like Retaining Walls. As the name suggests, retaining walls are tasked with holding back earth, usually on a slope. As such, they must be strong and reliable, because a failure could result in injury. The stones from which retaining walls are built are designed to be interlocking in a way that improves the overall strength. Some walls are formed from precast concrete, which is more reliable and comes in larger slabs. These slabs can be shaped to mimic a number of facing styles. Due to the importance of retaining walls, it is usually better that they be professionally installed.

Another example of a landscaping feature that can marry form and function is Patio Steps. While they may not seem as important as retaining walls, they nevertheless provide a necessary service. And there are such a wide range of options, many in precast concrete, that stylistic choice is available for every taste.

Landscaping is both an art and the application of science. Consider your options carefully when you seek to improve the grounds, be they small or large. Enhance your visitors' enjoyment with the right look and you may be rewarded.
