8 Simple Tips For Keeping Your Pet Birds Health.

By Ashley Houston

Birds need to eat a nutritionally sound diet in order to live a long life. A diet that is not rich in important nutrients can lead to malnutrition and to a much shorter length of life. Start off by feeding your bird right from the beginning.

Parrots, and also most other birds in the Parrot family, are able to eat a selection of different foods. Seeds should not be a parrot's only food. This is a mistake many new bird owners make. Seeds are fat and low in nutrients such as vitamins and proteins.

Birds are able to eat most foods humans eat, though it is best for them to eat whole grains, pretzels, pasta and bread. Foods high in fat should be avoided. Make sure that, of all fruits, you don't feed birds avocados, since they are toxic to them.

You should feed your birds beans and legumes, and also fruits and vegetables. Some birds resist new foods at first while others are open to trying many new things. Even if your bird refuses to eat things he is not familiar with, continue offering new foods.

Changes to a bird's diet should be done slowly and progressively over time. Give the bird fresh foods twice a day, and leave the food there for him for about an hour. Leaving the fresh food in the cage longer than that can make your bird sick because of the bacteria that develops.

Feed the bird a couple of times a day. Keeping to that schedule will make the bird hungry and, in turn, it will make it more ready to play. Having a good appetite will also make your bird more willing to try new foods you introduce. Feeding at regular times every day will also give you an idea of how much the bird eats. If your bird is not eating well this can tell you that it is not feeling well or has a health problem.

If your bird is fussy and will only eat certain foods, try cooking its vegetables. Keep seeds away, aside from mealtimes, until your bird decides it is going to try other healthy foods.

And, healthy birds need water as well. Your bird should always have plenty of fresh water to drink. Since your bird's water bowl will get dirty very easily, wash it with hot water and soap every day. Once every other week you should clean your bird's water dish with a solution containing bleach. It's also a good idea to give your bird some water soluble vitamins you can add to its drinking water every day.

If properly taken care of, birds can make good pets and they can live a long, happy life. Proper care of birds includes maintaining a healthy diet of seeds, vegetables and fruit.
