Planning And Embellishing A Bedroom For A Teenager

By Steve Artemi

When children get older each year, their needs and desires change especially as they become teenagers. Given that they are going to outgrow their bedrooms, you need to plan ahead so that it will be an easy transition. You need to be aware that your youngster will have their own viewpoints on what they want in their room so you should expect some compromises. On this page we will look at some of the areas that need to be considered when designing and decorating a bedroom for a teenager.

You want to make sure that the existing bedroom will be big enough when they become a teenager. If you have the option, you may want to move your teen to a bigger room in the home or expand the one they are currently in. The walls will need to be repainted using neutral colors which are going to give your teen options on how they want to decorate it. Teens really love to put up all kinds of posters and images on their walls so a neutral tone allows that flexibility. Added space for storage will also need to be considered since they will be having a lot more clothes and "stuff" in their room.

Like a teenager, your youngster will be spending more of their time in the bedroom. You may want to make their bedroom as comfortable as possible so adding a small sofa or lay-z-boy chair are good options. If they plan to do a lot of reading and writing, you may want to add more bookshelf space and ample lighting. Other items like drapes may need to be taken out and replaced with something more "grown-up."

Your teen will be doing a lot more studying and homework in the room. At the bare minimum, your teen should have a desk to work on plus they will probably need internet access. There can be a requirement for additional electrical sockets for computers or desk lamps as well as their own electrical gadgets. Your teen is likely to want to use their bedroom as their little castle of solitude. Along with all this, as teenagers can grow very quickly, a new bed may be a further expense and that is why planning and considering your budget is vital.

To make certain that your teen will have the ideal years of their lives, you want to make sure that their bedroom is a place that they can call their home base.
